University of Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma prepares for a play during the Cowboys’ 19-16 victory over Montana State on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.

University of Wyoming senior linebacker Chad Muma has been chosen as one of six finalists for the 37th Butkus Award, which honors the nation’s top collegiate linebacker.

The Lone Tree, Colorado, product has posted 120 tackles (75 solo), 7½ tackles for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery, a blocked kick and three interceptions. He has returned two of those interceptions for touchdowns.

Muma’s 6.8 solo tackles per game ranks second nationally, while his 10.9 tackles per game are tied for fourth in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Muma has 17 tackles in the Cowboys’ 44-17 victory at Utah State on Saturday. That was one shy of his career high. The 6-foot-3, 242-pounder has 245 career tackles (137 solo), 18½ tackles for loss, five sacks and three interceptions.

Last week, Muma accepted an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl. That game will be played at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in Mobile, Alabama.

The Cowboys are 6-5 overall and 2-5 in the Mountain West this season.
